Steadicam - the Early Days

A Blast from the Past

Thought you might like to see a blast from the past.

This is me flying a Steadicam Universal Model 1 with a Arri 35BL / 400' mag up (I was shooting for Cinemobile Systems as part of their Steadicam package), circa 1977. Ed owned the company back then (Cinema Products). A hell of a nice guy.

I don't remember what specific show I was flying this rig on, I shot a lot of one-half, one, and two day gigs in those days, but the focus CA is Greg Altzman.

Flying the Model 1 was not much different than the Steadicams of today, a real testament to Garrett Brown's basic design.

Behind the Scenes

"Quite an old photo that I just came across when sorting out some old drives, the original Flyer shooting a documentary called 'crossing the line' that aired on 60 minutes in the US.

Location is Panmunjom on the North Korean side of the border with south Korea
